Cultivated Meat to Protect Endangered Biodiversity

Every year on May 22nd, we celebrate International Day for Biological Diversity. Biological diversity is like a delicate web that protects everything that hangs on it. It’s about maintaining a balanced ecosystem of nature and all living things so they can live healthy and safely.

However, biological diversity is in crisis. According to WWF and the ZSL Institute of Zoology, global wildlife populations declined by an average of 69% between 1970 and 2018. According to WWF, the current extinction rate is 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than the natural extinction rate.

Industrial animal farming is destroying biodiversity. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), "around 30% of land on Earth is used for pastures and feed crops," by clearing natural environments. As land gets cleared, native species lose habitat, and invasive species often expand rapidly with the loss of natural enemies.

At the same time, greenhouse gases (GHGs) are emitted while raising livestock and transporting meat. According to the Breakthrough Institute, livestock accounts for about 11~19% of global GHG emissions. The methane emitted by cattle and the carbon dioxide by transportation during meat production and distribution contribute to extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. Extreme weather dramatically alters the climate and topography of habitats, making it harder for plants and animals that have adapted to their existing environment.

These out-of-balanced ecosystems affect our lives in direct and indirect ways, such as increased invasive species and reduced seasonal crop yields.

Cultivated meat can bring more stability to biological diversity. With this novel food, we can significantly reduce land and water usage and GHG emissions.

TissenBioFarm develops cultivated meat that provides the same flavor and nutrition as conventional meat. While maintaining the pleasure of eating meat, we can also protect the ecosystem on which countless living things depend. Meat that protects biodiversity, isn’t that exciting?
